Building and Perfecting your SKIN by REGEN Routine: Part One

Why is proper skin care important? Your skin is the largest organ and is working 24/7 to protect your body from environmental stresses such as the sun, toxins, carcinogens and pollution. We all know the sun has damaging affects and a landmark study in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology compared women living in urban and rural environments over 24 years and found that those exposed to increased pollution had more dark spots and wrinkling. Keeping our skin healthy and protected is vitally important more now than ever. Choosing the right skin care products you can trust is crucial too. Did you know many products on the market contain toxins and carcinogens in the ingredients that you definitely don’t want to be putting on your skin. We are here to help educate you towards a basic skin care routine you can trust.

IMPORTANT: Please take a moment and properly diagnose your skin type, to ensure you are using the correct skin care products. Using the wrong skin care products can aggravate the skin and lead to irritation, excess oil, breakouts or drying out skin which can make wrinkles more apparent.

Skin can be best classified as NORMAL if it's not oily or dry and without specific concerns, such as anti-aging, acne prone or sensitive. Skin feels basically normal most days, or only occasionally oily, dry or limited breakouts, which resolve quickly.  Your complexion appears balanced and you don’t typically experience any adverse reactions to skin care products. 


Skin can be best classified as DRY if it has a damaged moisture barrier.  Skin has invisible cracks and it allows moisture to escape and irritants to get in more easily. The best skincare routine for dry skin contains products that keep skin hydrated. If your skin feels tight or itchy on most days after cleansing, or you always feel like you are lacking moisture, you have dry skin. There might be occasional flakiness or scaling at the surface.  One important difference between dry skin and dehydrated skin.....Dry skin is a skin type caused by a lack of oil production in the skin whereas Dehydrated skin is caused by a lack of water and is temporary due to perhaps the climate or other environmental factors or simply not drinking enough water.

Skin can be best classified as OILY/ACNE PRONE if it has larger oil glands and a high sebum content.  Oily skin has built-in oil, so the goal is to lessen the oil activity by keeping the skin cells lightly hydrated.  The best skincare routine for oily/ acne prone skin contain ingredients that help control excess oil production.   Visibly, your skin is shiny and you may notice a lot of excess oil on your face, neck, shoulders and back. Pores appear enlarged and get clogged easily, which leads to black/whiteheads, pimples or even cystic acne.

Skin can be best classified as COMBINATION if you’re oily in some places and dry in others, finding one routine in the middle of the road is best.  Your skin is oily, has enlarged pores, or breaks out in your T-ZONE area (forehead, nose, chin), but is mostly dry or normal on your cheeks and jawline. Combination skin can sometimes be tricky to treat since you are dealing with two different skin care concerns. Your goal: balance.

Skin can be best classified as SENSITIVE if it's irritated or gets red easily.... it's simply more delicate skin that you can’t be aggressive with.  Your skin may get easily irritated or inflamed, or is itchy, dry or gets red easily.  Your skin may have adverse reaction when using a new product, and you may typically flush easily with heat.  Individuals with sensitive skin might also sunburn easily or experience conditions such as eczema or rosacea flare ups.  Unfortunately, there are a number of things that can contribute to skin sensitivity, and it can be tough to pin down a single cause. There are, of course, genetics and hormone fluctuations. Weather (heat and cold), dry climates and hard water can have a big effect on skin. And, the products you use (makeup, lotions, soap, laundry detergent, etc.), can include fragrances or harsh chemicals which can aggravate skin sensitivities or allergies. 


Skin can be best classified as MATURE/AGING if the main goal is to plump up wrinkles, banish dark spots, and lift sagging. Your skin care regimen will be similar to that of those with dry skin, with a few small differences.  There are THREE main signs of skin aging and each one effects facial skin in a different way: 

1-Wrinkles:  The first noticeable signs of skin aging are fine lines and wrinkles.  Throughout the aging process, they become more prominent and evolve into more permanent wrinkles that are visible even when our face is fixed. 

2-Loss of volume: The first noticeable signs of loss of volume are in the lips when lipstick starts to bleed.   Loss of facial volume typically results in sagging skin,  flattening of the cheeks and the overall appearance of a “sagging at the neck”.

3-Loss of elasticity and deep wrinkles: Over time, as our skin matures,  it's structure weakens and it loses elasticity and firmness. Skin also becomes drier, appears more `crepey` and loses the healthy glow we associate with youthful skin.
